다음은 OMG(Object Management Group)에서 사용하는 Ontology의 정의이다.

An "ontology" defines the common terms and concpets (meaning) used to describe and represent an area of knowledge. An ontology can range from a Taxonomy(knowledge with minimal hirearchy or a parent/child structure) to a Thesaurus (words and synonyms) to a Conceptual Model ( with more complex knowledge) to Logical theory (with very rich, complex, consistent and meaningful knowledge). A well-formed ontoloy is one that is expressed in a well-defined syntax that has a well-defined machine interpretation consistent with the above definition.

Ontology는 어떤 특정 도메인의 지식을 표현하고 설명하기 위해서 사용하는 용어와 개념을 정의하는 것이다. Ontology는 분류학(Taxonomy)에서 부터 관련어(Thesaurus), 개념 모델(Conceptual model), 그리고 논리(logical theory)까지 다양한 범위를 아우른다. 제대로 정리된(well-formed) ontology는 잘 정의된 형식(syntax)을 통해 표현되고, 이 형식은 잘 정의된 기계 번역(machine interpretaton)을 가지게 된다.

하지만 위의 논문에서는 다음과 같이 Onotology를 정의한다.

An ontology is a formal, explicit specification of a shred, machine-readable vocabuary and meanings, in the frm of various entities and relationships between them, to desribe knowledge about the contents of ne or more related subject domains throughou the life cycle of its exstence. These entities and relationships are used to represent knowledge in the set of related subject domain. Formal referstothe fact that te ontology should be representable in a formal grammar.Explicit means that the entities and relationships used, and the constraints on their use, are precisely and unambiguously defined in a declarative language suitable for knowledge representation. Shared means that all users of an ontology will represent a concept using the same or equivalent set of entities and relationships. Subject domain refers to the content of the universe of discourse being represented by the ontology.
